Toastmaster services by AW Toastmaster ensure that your special day is elevated to new heights, leaving you with unforgettable memories. With a focus on seamless execution, I specialise in orchestrating wedding ceremonies and corporate events that are both memorable and unique.
A Brief History of Toastmasters
Wedding toastmasters have a history rooted in the Middle Ages, evolving from individuals managing wine in grand houses to playing a crucial role in formal events, especially weddings. Their primary function is to coordinate and announce ceremonial proceedings, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable reception.
The title Toastmaster comes from the Master of the Toast who would toast small pieces of bread, then dip them in herbs and spices before placing them in a bowl of wine to enhance it's flavour. This is reputed to have originated in the reign of King Charles II.
Dating back to the Hebrews and Greeks, drinking to someone's health has evolved over time. At the end of the 17th Century toasting a VIPs health at a banquet became a custom.
It wasn't until 1894 that the characteristic red coat was introduced by William Knightsmith when he had concerns about being dressed like a head waiter or butler. His wife suggested wearing a red coat so he stood out. The Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII) saw him and admired the red coat commenting favourably on it.

The Benefits of Hiring a Toastmaster

At a wedding a Toastmaster acts as your wedding’s MC and coordinator. This leaves you to enjoy your wedding day without the worry of organising suppliers and making sure guests are in the right place at the right time. In addition to working with fellow wedding suppliers, a toastmaster offers excellent support to the bride, groom and wedding party members, each of whom has their own important role to fulfil.
Many think that a toastmaster’s responsibilities are covered by the best mans duties. Trusting a professional Toastmaster and their expert management skills will guarantee a positive experience on your big day. With the help of a Toastmaster your day can run smoothly, eliminating any stress for the bride and groom.

Since then I have collected everything to give your Bridal Party and Guard of Honour a distinctive look. With two styles of tunics, caps or helmets, white belts or black, I have what you need for a smart guard of honour for your wedding, funeral or Fire Service event. All items supplied are genuine surplus Fire Service items.
Sorry this service is only available to serving and retired fire service personnel. Proof may be asked for.
Hire fees:
Tunic - £50 each
Helmets, caps, axe and belt - £5 each
White gloves, lanyards and button holes, if required, are provided free if tunics are hired.
Each order attracts a non-refundable £50 booking fee per tunic to cover initial costs.
If not employing me as a Toastmaster at the event transport fees may be ensured depending on location.
All items are returnable and attract a 25% refundable deposit in addition to the charges. If cancellation is received within 28 days or if items are damaged when returned the deposit is not refunded.

About AW Toastmaster
With 37 years in the fire service, including serving in central London near the Tower of London, I am familiar with participating in parades, traditions, and ceremonies. I was honoured to join the Civil Services Contingent in the 2023 Remembrance Parade at the Cenotaph and have been the Colour Bearer towards the end of my career.
Additionally, I have spent 17 years as a group fitness instructor, which has bolstered my public speaking confidence. My roles in training and policy within the fire service have honed my attention to detail and interpersonal skills.
In my mid-twenties, I was honoured to be the best man at a friend’s wedding, where a Toastmaster was present to guide the day. I was genuinely impressed by how much the Toastmaster enhanced the occasion. Inspired further after having a Toastmaster at my own wedding, I decided to pursue this path myself and trained with the Executive Guild of Toastmasters to become a professional Toastmaster.
Being a Best Man and becoming a Toastmaster aren't my only experience with weddings. Before moving to Devon I was a campanologist, church bell ringer, and I've rung bells for many weddings. Some in enclose ringing chambers, and others where the ringing chamber is on an balcony overlooking the naive.
Now, I take great pride in supporting Brides and Bridegrooms on their special day. My aim is to ensure everything runs seamlessly, allowing you to truly enjoy every moment. Giving you peace of mind so that you can rest assured your wedding will be as smooth and memorable as it deserves to be. Let me help make your celebration truly unforgettable.
I am based in Devon, conveniently near the M5 and major routes to Cornwall, Dorset, and Somerset but willing to travel further afield.
